Uriel had long guarded the gates of heaven, where good souls sleep quietly, awaiting the Day of Selection that comes once every several thousand years. On that day God questions the true nature of each soul, and those recognized as possessing superior qualities are granted the mark of blessing by God. One day, sensing through her own power over time that the Day of Selection had come, Uriel used the holy key granted by God to create a door that would lead souls out of heaven, and guided the souls of heaven toward the place of selection. Believing that from among these souls a new light of hope would be born, and that the world would grow ever more filled with radiance, Uriel wore a bright and cheerful smile.

Uriel had long guarded the gates of hell, where evil souls atone for their sins, awaiting the Day of Selection that comes once every several thousand years. On that day God questions the true nature of each soul: those who have repented of their sins are permitted to enter heaven, and those who have not are returned once more to hell. One day, sensing through her own power over time that the Day of Selection had come, Uriel used her sword of flame to create a door that would lead souls out of hell and — restraining those who resisted with the holy radiance of her sword of light — guided the souls of hell toward the place of selection. Praying that from among these souls there would be those who repented their sins and could go to heaven, Uriel walked onward with a solemn expression.

Mahazael, who had fallen from heaven bearing hatred for humanity and destroyed the machine that governs time, was captured by Uriel and brought before a tribunal of the heavens — where he denounced humanity's corruption and the God who had left it unchecked. Mahazael's execution was decided; yet at the same time, judging that there was some reason in his words, God decreed that the heavens would visit a trial upon humanity. Uriel, who believed that both humans and Mahazael could still be redeemed, defied God's decision and tried to halt the execution — but Mahazael only sneered at her, and moved to cast himself into the execution device of his own accord. Uriel stopped him at the very last moment. To her, Mahazael — though he never accepted the hope for humanity of which she spoke — offered words of gratitude for having believed in him to the very end. And so Uriel purified the soul of Mahazael, who had accepted his own salvation, and at the same time restored the broken machine that governs time.

One day, an angel named Mahazael, found through the selection of souls to possess superior gifts, was newly welcomed into the heavens. When Uriel became his instructor, Mahazael swiftly distinguished himself and came to be regarded as full of promise. However, in the course of his work as an angel, Mahazael suffered a cruel betrayal at human hands. Falling into despair over humankind, Mahazael came to hate both humanity and the God who had left humanity's corruption unchecked, and he fell from heaven. Unable to refute Mahazael's words of hatred, Uriel let him slip away — and lost her confidence, both because someone close to her had fallen following Lucifer, and because she had been unable to voice any objection to the despair Mahazael held toward humans. Yet with the help of the other angels, Uriel was able to conclude that Mahazael's words were wrong after all, and that there was hope for humanity; realizing that she alone could stop him, she rose again. Discovering that Mahazael intended to destroy the machine that governs time as a symbol of God's arrogance, Uriel stood in his path as he came to carry out its destruction, and faced him. Taking up her twin swords of light and flame, meeting Mahazael with dauntless resolve, Uriel succeeded at the end of the battle in capturing him. However, in the fierce fighting, part of the machine that governs time was destroyed.
